That’s right. culture|garage members, Palmer, JK and myself (Chris) will be fielding a team to compete in September’s 24 Hours of LeMons. We don’t have a car (yet), but we do have a plan. If you have been living under a rock for the past couple of years 24 hours of LeMons is a 24 hour race of beaters that were purchased for under $500. As for the title of this entry, a modest proposal was sent to Jalopnik, challenging them to a duel of the blogs. But I never heard anything back.

AutoBlog, got called out, because, well, they like to rip off our ideas. ;-) I mean, I clearly associated the new CAFE standards with School House Rock. My entry from four days prior vs. their entry.

EDIT: Ok, so they beat me to it.  Here I thought I was all clever, view the comments for AutoBlog’s link.

My proposal to Jalopnik:

December 13th

Hello Jalopnik team

I/we would like to extend a challenge. We are a young auto blog/forum
(read, two days old). www.culturegarage.com

As you may know, this year’s midwest 24h event for Lemons is in
Toledo, OH.

I think it would be a great idea if we challenged one another. Make
the bets something stupid. i.e. Loser does a feature story on the
other blog’s car and runs a banner ad on their site for the other blog.

During the build up, we could have posts/pictures detailing our build,
to drive interest.

The race is in Toledo on 9/13.

Do you have any interest in this?

We will compete regardless, but it would be awesome to make it a
friendly public wager.

We could even have our readers polled to determine what the wager
could be.

Best,
Chris

  1. yes! this is a sweet idea! if this happens, you should setup a paypal account for sponsorship. anyone that sends money can get their name on the car or something. :)

  2. Bump, that’s exactly what I had in mind. Actually, 24 Hours of LeMons was the main reason I wanted to start a site. :D

  3. I would very much like to see this happen.

  4. Awww, c’mon! I used the School House Rock angle on 12/7 for the first time! ;)

  5. @ John.

    Touche!

So you going to compete against us!?

  6. I hate to break it to you, but as the resident LeMons-obsessive at Autoblog I guess it’s my job. We won’t be able to make it out to the Toledo Racetrack in September, as there’s not a strong AB contingent in the area to field a car. We are beginning to look at a campaign in May at the Altamont, but that’s going to be dependent on time and funding. Regardless, best of luck and be sure to take a bead on any of the buff books that show up.

  7. PayPal. Do it.

  8. We appreciate the offer of a bit of friendly competition and we’ll strongly consider it, but like Autoblog our issues are time and money. Hopefully we’ll have the chance to run some laps together, but if we don’t make it out there, we hope you’ll do what Damon suggests.

  9. @Ray of Jalopnik

Bummer, it was right in your back yard.

We don’t have money either. Just heart. ;)

  10. It sounds to me like Autoblog and Jalopnik already know what’s going to happen….

  11. They’re shaking in their boots.

They must have seen Chris behind the wheel at some point in time.

  12. The glare off his bald head will distract their race drivers, causing them to spin out and crash. I’ve seen it happen.

  13. Plus, he’ll be the only one out there with eurohemmed race attire. That’s enough to intimidate anyone.

  14. Oh, and don’t forget the designer label race shoes…

  15. I also hear rumors of a designer line of pit/crew attire. No joke.

  16. Be sure to wash your flame retardant suit inside out, and never ever use the dryer.

Also, a dash of vanilla extract in the washer gives your pit crew a relaxing aroma that lasts all day.

  17. More money spent on the drivers designer cloths than the car he’s driving FTW.

I’d be scared to race a model, they play dirty.

  18. @Rob,

    Broken ankles on the runway?

  19. I am so there! Count me in for pit crew!

  20. So why don’t Autoblog and Jalopnik team up to co-sponsor a car if each blog is unable to support a car of there own hmm.

  21. @ Jeff

More like pulling of hair and beotch slapping not to mention all the backstabbing and rumors about who you slept with and your eating disorder. Enough to ruin a career in racing.

  22. Support a car, common, the limit is $500, the only other real work that you’ve got to put in is safety!
