The UK’s Telegraph reports that Saudi Arabia will be lifting the ban on female drivers in order to stem the suffragette-style movement. Government officials hope to have this all in place by the end of 2008.

While we may not see it as a big deal, there are much larger intricacies, i.e. insurance companies needing to develop new policies and practices.

While many have been protested against this law, which existed since 1932, there are still many critics.

There voice of dissent cries that this will be the first blow to the state’s modesty laws. “Allowing women to drive will only bring sin,” a letter to Al-Watan newspaper declared last year. “The evils it would bring - mixing between the genders, temptations, and tarnishing the reputation of devout Muslim women - outweigh the benefits.”
