What’s the deal with NBC?!
You may remember that NBC is in the works to bring the hugely popular British car-themed talk show Top Gear to America. Rumors were wild about who would host, since the trio on the UK version could make watching paint dry an award-winning ratings juggernaut.
Jay Leno’s name came up pretty quickly, since the Late Night host is a huge car aficionado. While I’m not a fan, it at least makes sense.
However, Edmunds Inside Line is reporting that Jerry Seinfeld might also be in the running. Is that a good thing? I’m not sure he could honestly review anything but the “new” 1996 Saab 9000.
Either way I don’t see this show turning out well. I’d rather see more money spent on getting the full BBC version over here without commercials, because we know they can do it right.
No word yet on if Michael Richards would play the part of the Stig. I figure that’s not a bad idea, since being a non-speaking role he can’t offend any minorities. Giddyup!

i’d be happy with seinfeld.. he’s obviously a huge porsche nut. he’d make a good bizarro clarkson.

I’d prefer him over Leno, but really they need to just make a new show inspired by Top Gear, not a new version of it. It’s not going to be good.

Seiny for the win, but full blown limey boob tube action may work out as well.

I think Seinfeld would be good: funny, cynical, has funny expressions on his face when he tests fast cars, etc.

ugh this just won’t turn out good, as much as I respect Seinfeld.
I’ll continue to watch the BBC version when it hits the web (around 10-11pm eastern standard time Sunday nights).
u.s. top gear = lame! They’ll test all sorts of awful American crap.

Although I love the idea of an American Top Gear, they need to get some folks whose lifelong focus has been cars. Leno would be ok, I suppose, but they need a Rick Reilly kind of guy, in the same sense that he makes light of sports, although it’s his job.
I really like the idea of seeing new American cars reviewed, and seeing some foreign makes panned for a change.

at least they get a die hard car fanatic hosting this. seinfeld has more money than god, so he’s driven everything. he’ll have an informed opinion. i’ve never seen him when he’s not scripted, but he seems far less annoying than leno. maybe that everyman appeal that worked for seinfeld will make him an appealing host here.
