If cars are rolling pieces of art, than what better than the car to be the subject of art? I’m sure some of us recall the grade-school book: How to Draw Cars, and struggling with the techniques explained in the text, only to end up using the supplied tracing paper to “draw” what our heart desired. For those of you who still desire to learn how to draw your favorites, with or without tracing paper, there is hope.

User CGVickers over at DeviantART has posted a cool tutorial article on drawing “chibi” cars. The “chibi” style is a sort of Ed Roth meets Seth MacFarlane school of drawing, which in this case, seems to emphasize the truncation of the objects depicted. Although you won’t see a lot of chibi cars with monsters rowing 4-speeds while side pipes shoot flames, you will see some interesting, well crafted pieces depicting all manner of transportation. Be sure to check out the tutorial HERE, and if you want, send us your results!

Thom Taylors books, “How to Draw Cars Like A Pro” are excellent. For those starting out, don’t run before you can walk. Stick to 2d first, side profiles. Draw a straight line for a wheel base and two circles for wheels(trace the bottom of a cup if you cant make a perfect circle). Once you get get at 2d, then comes perspective. Dont even draw cars at first, draw cubes/rectangles. Get good at that and start making the lines lighter and putting ellipses at the corners for wheels. Soften the form little by little and before you know it you are drawing cars in 3d. I have taught a couple of college level courses on this stuff
