Question of the Week

March 31, 2008

Ahh, the open road. Who doesn’t like a trip to nowhere, with no schedules, worries, or problems glutting up the way? I mean, if you don’t count gas, or lodging, or baggage, or food, which begs the question…

Most cars come with lots of holders for stuff on long trips, like luggage racks, cargo nets, et. al. But what about the cupholder, and the connotation that that brings to travel and cars? The question of the week is geared thusly: Do you eat/ drink in your car? Why or why not? Do you take in Starbucks or Seattle’s Best on your morning commute, or do you like to kick back with the Colonel’s finest, wiping your greasy paws on convenient swatches of velour?

For me, food in the car is an interesting conundrum as I have eaten while driving, only because those fries won’t stay hot forever. I delicately balance drinks in my fold-out “cup spiller.” This doesn’t mean that I make a habit of it, and no item, culinary or otherwise, has taken up permanent residence on my car’s floor, in the glovebox, or anywhere else. What say you?

  1. I drink in my Volkswagen all the time. It’s my workhorse car; I drive it to work, where I needed to pound my Red Bull to survive the day. When fully stopped in traffic (I-95 South on a weekday morning; try it sometime), every once in a while I would nibble on a bagel. I wasn’t going anywhere, so I figured there was no harm. But when on the move, I don’t eat at all. But if a drop of coffee spills in my car, it’s no big deal. It’s not like it’s a Porsche or anything.

In my Porsche, I generally don’t drink and never eat at all. For one, the cupholders are completely useless. And I don’t have anything laying about the cabin since I usually only drive it with the top down, so it would be all over the place. If I’m deathly thirsty on a terribly hot day, then I’ll buy a bottle of water (it may be pretentious, but a small bottle of Fiji water fits perfectly in the center console storage. Of course it doesn’t make for speedy reinsertion, but we all have our crosses to bear).

  2. I will only drink drinks in my car. There is a standing rule in my car that you cannot eat messy food in there, only Golden Pantry chicken biscuts. This came about after my ex spilled Coke Black and BB-Q sauce in my car the first month I had it. The only time I eat in my car is contained food (fries) on my way to work (37 miles). I don’t think taking attention from the wheel is a good idea.

  3. i have no problem with my own food consumption, but there can’t be any traces of it (crumbs or odor) afterwards. other people can eat in my car if they’re not eating messy stuff. once tartar sauce fell in an unreachable crevice in the summertime and i wasn’t happy. no problem with drinks consumed.

  4. My cupholders are for holding cups until I reach my destination. At least in my car. Long trips - beverages are ok, but no food eaten in the car. When driving the work truck - a crew cab, long bed f-350 duallie usually towing a heavy trailer - food and drinks are fair game…hell, its not my car, and the thing tracks in a straight line no matter what with that trailer. i’m a pro at eating footlong sub sandwiches, changing the ipod track, and paying a toll all at the same time. what about accident avoidance you ask? not gonna happen. The thing is so big and heavy and carries so much inertia that there’s no such thing. someone does something stupid in front of me, they’re gonna get hit, whether or not i’m a “distracted driver”. in my car? the only time i don’t have both hands on the wheel is if i’m changing gears.

  5. We eat in and drink in my (our) car. With kids it’s kinda hard to have a no food/drink rule. The car is always a mess but it keep everyone happy. Between the two of us (my fiance and I) he has a 3 year old and I have a 4.5 year old. On the weekends that we have his daughter it’s messier than usual since it’s x 2. Thankfully most things are easy to clean up.

  6. When I’m drinking in my car, it’s usually Bacardi Rum and Diet Coke. This is often consumed in a coffee cup with a lot of ice.

The best part of this drink is that Diet Coke doesn’t stain, making it the best “road soda” known to man.
