NHRA, NASCAR Weekend Wrap-Up

Heartland Park Topeka- Although “ladies’ night” isn’t exactly a PC description of the NHRA lately, you can certainly see why it is an apt one. Hillary Will took down Larry Dixon this weekend in Kansas to claim her first Top Fuel title. Will also bested Morgan Lucas and Cory McClenethan’s efforts, knocking them out in the rounds proceeding the final. “I’m thankful for all the women drivers who’ve paved the way and shown that women can drive a race car and drive a race car well,” said Will. “I’m proud of Melanie, and I’m proud of Ashley, and I’m proud of other women in motorsports. Honestly, we just want to be racers. I do hope that other women who want to succeed in male-dominated fields, whether it be politics or business, can see what I do, and I hope that inspires them because it’s not only in racing where women can succeed in a male-dominated field,” said Will. Will took out Dixon at the O’Reilly Summernats with a 4.74 ET and an .038 light. John Force nabbed Wally #126 at Heartland Park, illustrating his will to win and recover from his crash last September. This latest Funny Car win comes over Tim Wilkerson, who has staged an amazing effort this season on a shoestring budget. Force prevailed with an ET of 4.996 to take the victory. In Pro Stock, Ron Krisher drove around Larry Morgan after being bested on the tree, checking in with an ET of 6.758 to take home the Wally. This win makes Krisher’s sixth in NHRA POWERAde Pro Stock racing.

Dover International Speedway, Dover, Del.- The Toyota folks are licking their chops right now, and rightly so. In the past 13 races, the automaker responsible for unleashing the Corolla, Camry, Tundra and others snapped up five victories, four of which were courtesy of Mr. Kyle Busch- including the one this past weekend at the “Monster Mile” in Dover. Barring the cheesy “Miles the Monster” trophy and character, Dover is a very demanding track, which commands the utmost of respect from drivers, crewchiefs and team owners alike. While various NASCAR-based shows banter over the villification of Busch, who pilots the #18 M+M’s (mmmm-mmmm good!) and Combos (mmmm-mmmmm! really good!) Toyota (nuhhh-uhhh! not so good!), it’s not clear if fans dislike Busch, his driving style, or simply the badge plastered on his stock car. Whatever the reason, the alleged “least-favorite” driver has taken this season by the cojones and made it his. In second place, and back by eight seconds, was “Cousin” Carl Edwards in his #99 Taurus, while third saw Greg Biffle in another Taurus, rebounding from a misfiring engine earlier in the race.
