Buick, seriously Harley Earl is pissed.

Buick, seriously Harley Earl is pissed.

Buick. You are killing me. And re-killing Harley Earl. This is going to take a lot for me to say… but you actually make some good looking cars. I even recommended the Enclave to my mom, who promptly declaims, “A Buick?! I’m not in a retirement home.” Then you have the Lacrosse, which is certainly one of the best looking sedans on the market. And I truly mean that, the way the exhaust is so neatly designed into the rear fascia and bumper just exudes luxury. You’ve made something that could and will easily trump competitors of the likes of Lexus.

You know you are doing something right when a person under 30 goes, damn, I’d probably drive that. At the GM tech event, earlier this summer, you showcased some of the newer products that will be coming down the Buick pipeline. And I can say without sarcasm, that they are some extremely sexy vehicles.

Except for one thing, the portholes. The portholes have to go. They completely flaw an otherwise beautifully flowing car. And they aren’t even functional. It’s even worse when something is ugly, distracting and on top of all that, useless.

So please, Buick. Stop with the plastic portholes. Remember when Pontiac got rid of that crappy plastic molding/ribs on the Grand Am? And with them removed, they just flew off the showroom floors. Errrr. Ok, bad example.

I don’t know, whenever I see the stick-on portholes, I am immediately reminded of Buicks.  Secondarily, I think of Aston Martin.  I agree, portholes have to go across the board, but it looks like the trend is on the uptick for right now.

Some ridiculous sightings in the last week:
The 24” sticker on the door of a Chevy Suburban, with 16” wheels.
Upside-down porthole stickers on a pickup.
A cobra hood ornament, right in the middle of the hood.  Another pickup.

I suggest setting your bar lower for Buick.  You’ll still be disappointed, but at least you won’t be as confused.

I don’t think I agree.  I have an enclave and love the look of the portholes and think they add a touch of elegance.  When I first saw the lacrosse I was equally impressed by the gorgeous lines of this car but I was even more impressed with the porthole treatment.  And the fact that many luxury and non-luxury automakers seem to be looking for a way to put portholes or other chrome-clad openings on the sides of their cars it seems that in the design game most think Buick is on the right track.  I’m a former all toyota and honda driving baby boomer and it was the design elegance and quality that brought me to an american car for the first time.

You got something to say ?
