Corvette to go on a diet: shed weight and power

corvette.jpg

Automotive News sat down with an executive that works on the Corvette line, Tom Wallace, and chatted about the new CAFE standards and its effect on the Corvette.

The 'vette will live on, but Wallace says, "I don't think we're going to design a 700-hp Corvette." While he doesn't go into specifics, he hinted that the next generation 'Vette (due in 2012) will probably shed 3-400 pounds and move to a more efficient engine (shedding 150hp?) all the while still maintaining the current performance figures.

Wallace continues, "I think we need to say, 'We reached performance levels that are pretty good. Let's maintain those and improve fuel economy."

True.
But someone in the market for a Corvette isn’t going to be concerned about fuel economy.

If they can keep the same numbers while getting better fuel economy, that’s a win/win for everyone. It’s all about maintaining the power to weight ratio.
