Top 10 American sleepers, best list ever.

800px-ford_taurus_sho_second-gen.jpg

Everyone loves lists. And we aim to please. Yesterday we picked up european car's top 10 sleepers, which had us thinking about a list of American cars. Only thing is, none of us really follow American cars, well, besides Jim but you probably already figured that out. ;)

Is our list the be all end all? Yes. You will never find a more complete list, we diligently covered all of the bases and discussed this via like two emails. Plenty of time and thought was put into this list. So I am highly confident that we didn't miss a single sleeper. In case the Internetz confuses you, I was being highly sarcastic.

The full list follows the jump.

mercury.jpg

2003-04 Mercury Marauder - something you would expect either a 92 year old man going to church or a police officer to be driving. Nothing about this signals that it has any sort of power. It packed a 302 hp / 318 ft-lb tq V-8 from the Mustang Cobra. It would pull low 7 second 0-60 runs.

catalina.jpg

1963 "swiss cheese" Pontiac Catalina - leave it up to Pontiac to do this, they drilled holes in the chassis to help reduce weight (hence swiss cheese), let's just say chassis rigidity wasn't its strong point. The car shaved 300lbs vs the standard models. But it didn't end there, they also shoved a 421 cubic inch engine in the car that made 410hp. And covered off 0-60 in 5 seconds.

buick.jpg

1982-87 Buick Regal/Grand National - This had to make this list. No way around it. Sheer ridiculousness wearing a Buick badge. This isn't Tiger Woods' Buick. In 85 they switched to a different engine set up and were running a turbo charged 3.8l V-6 with 360lb-ft of tq. Real world performance numbers showed the car being capable of 0-60 in under 5 seconds with a low 13 second quarter mile.

dodge-magnum-srt8-top.jpg

2007-08 Dodge Magnum SRT8 - You just got beat by a wagon. Yeah it's got a HEMI. A 6.1 liter HEMI v-8, takes this family hauler to 60 in 5 seconds in a very unassuming manner.

800px-ford_taurus_sho_second-gen.jpg

1992-95 Ford Taurus SHO - some may argue that the first gen would be a better representation. But, I pay the hosting fees, so I say that the second gen belongs here. This Taurus had the Yamaha developed 3 liter V6 and a 5 speed manual. It even looked (kind of) cool.

gmc-typhoon.jpg

1992-93 GMC Typhoon - this one really doesn't need any explanation. The Typhoon was based on the GMC Jimmy. But with just a few slight tweaks. The awd (35/65 split) was powered by a 4.3 liter turbo V6 that propelled the vehicle to low 5 second 0-60 times.

omni.jpg

1984-86 Dodge/Shelby Omni GLH - Goes Like Hell. If you have that in your name, you better be able to back it up. Fortunately this front wheel drive Golf/Rabbit competitor did have what it takes. A 2.2 liter turbo 4 hauled this wrong wheel drive vehicle around. Quite rapidly.

dodge-coronet.JPG

1965 Dodge Coronet - I don't know what the hell this is. But Jim said I should put it on the list. And well since, I don't make any money and can't really pay him I have to throw him bones like this. From what I dug up, it has a HEMI. It doesn't look flashy. It was fast. That's all I've got.

460-chevrolet-impala-ss.jpg

2008 Chevy Impala SS - Look at this. Nothing about it looks muscular. Or ever attractive. This car just blends in. But it has a hidden agenda. It has a 303 hp 5.3 liter small block V8 and a low 6 second 0-60 time(which isn't all that impressive). But it certainly is vanilla, so it makes the list.

2005_dodge_neon_srt4.jpg

2003-05 Dodge Neon SRT4 - Hell yes. Is it a sleeper? Hmmm, minus the big ass spolier, yes. Most of you are probably vomiting on your keyboards right now. But yup, a Neon made the list. True, you can't even get power rear windows. But this econ-box turned 'bahn burner deserves to be on the list. Besides no car has became such an icon and martyr on automotive forums.

Very few of those are actually sleepers.
Hood scoops, ground effects, and spoilers usually say, ” I am wicked fast.”
Also the front passenger side tire on the Mazda Milenia (sp?) that is to the right of the Taurus SHO is flat.

I really don’t think the Grand National should be on there, did anyone ever underestimate those? Maybe in 1985, but certainly not now.
The Turbo T/A would have been better. Less well known, looks like an 80s pos Trans Am, and I believe is still the fastest stock T/A made. (Including LS1 models.)
Also, I disregard any cars from the 60s as sleepers because back then, almost anything could have a hemi or big block stuffed in it from the factory. You just never know.

PS- Marauders are slow. Lack of torque in the mid range means the 260 hp Impala SS will pull away.

PPS anything with a bulging hood scoop and HEMI badging does not a sleeper make.

I think the GMC Typhoon and Syclone are the best, mainly because they haven’t tried anything like that in the US since then, and they actually worked.

If we are talking sleepers, the Dodge Turbo Caravan should have made the list. I’m disappointed.

@ Paul, you know, that was on the long list.  We had a whole slew of them.  I just didn’t want to make the list so heavily skewed towards Dodge so the Caravan lost out.

The turbo caravan isn’t fast stock anyways.
You have to mod them to make them fast.

fair enough, and a GLH is a reasonable substitute, though the “sleeper” factor is kinda low on those what with the body kit and all especially if its red, i think they came in silver, that would help a lot.

@ mo, no way a vette is a sleeper

The Marauder looks the part but its slow as hell.  A v-6 Accord is quicker.  It didn’t improve on what Chevy offered in the 94-96′ Impala SS.  DOHC V8 was nice, sounded good, looked good, but needed about 420hp and to be able to rub high 13’s, not 15’s.

yeh chris your right. from a sports car point of view i think it is though. it looked barely different from the c4, but was doing 0-60 in less than 5 secs.

Don’t know what a Coronet is?  Dude, you’re missing out.  Dodge made these sleepers for about 40 years, took whatever their current musclecar racer was, de-badged it and made it 4 door, and called it a Coronet.  DodgeCoronet.com is all about these awesome sleepers.

Well done on the SHO. My friends family had one in high school and it was a great sleeper for sure.

I don’t ever write on these things, but my little brother has the Taurus SHO and I just bought the 2007 Chevy Impala SS and I love them both. Family cars gone CRAZY SLEEPERThe funny part is how people just look at you after they got smoked off the line.

My third Impala is a 2008 SS and I just drive it around to drive it around. It is just plain fun to drive!
Bob, you said it! When the ‘kids’ in their Japanese rockets eventually catch up at the next set of lights they either avoid eye contact all together or just admit defeat.
This would be a “great” car if it was rear wheel drive. It looses power around the corners even with the traction control off so its only good in a strait line

1991-92 DODGE SPIRIT R/T.

THE STATS:

14.5 IN THE 1/4 AND 5.8 SECONDS 0-60. IT’S FAST, JUST ASK “CAR AND DRIVER” (SEPT 91).
THEY SAID: “UNLESS YOU’RE PILOTING SAY A CORVETTE ZR-1 OR A CRUISE MISSLE YOU’LL DO WELL TO LAY LOW IF A SPIRIT R/T ROLLS ALONGSIDE YOU AT A STOPLIGHT.”

Gotta agree on the 08 Impala SS. We just got one last Friday. Nothing like pulling up beside an Accord with a fart-can exhaust at 75mph and squealing the tires! The tuner geeks freak and cry for mommy! Yep, muscle is back. The most impressive thing on this car is the suspension. It eats corners. As a Harley V-rod rider, I know a little something about fast and straightening curves. The Impala can do it. The Dodge Magnum has to give the nod to the Impala in the twisties. I’ve smoked a friend with a Magnum a couple of time already. He’s a very good driver also. The big wagon just can’t corner.

A friend won a replica Mac Tools 2008 Chevy Impala SS Pace Car from the Nascar Sharpie 500 at Bristol Speedways last year. It has all the decals, and even a wing on the back.

You only need about 300 RWHP to put a Marauder in the 13’s.  Stock they are slow but they respond very well to small mods.  A tune alone puts them into the high to mid 14’s.

The Marauder is definately not slow . Is it the fastest car? no def not but it;s also like 4,000 lbs and i dont care is a honda accord beat it or not because at the end of the day…...it’s still an accord and its still a bitch car.

What about the Dodge Spirit R/T?  Those were wicked fast 4 door turbos!  They have often been called the SRT4’s daddy.

The coronet should most definately not be on there, in the mid 60’s the coronet was one of the fastest cars of its day, and everyone knew…the Chrysler run race team The Ramchargers specifically designed the HEMI in that car, and that was one of the first years they used the 426 cubic inch engine as well. They estimated horsepower rating back then to be about 425, which was greatly under rated…it was more like 500+.

Is this a joke. The BIGGEST sleeper has to be the 1996 Buick Roadmaster Limited. Looks like an old man is going to play golf in it. It has a Corvette LT1 engine producing 330 torque. Mine runs a 6.5 second 0-60. I am sorry but if the more sporty-less quick Marauder made it on the list, the Roadmaster obviously would 2.

I realize I’m a little late to the party, but whatever.
The GN could’ve been swapped for a T-Type. Actually in 87 the turbo 3.8 was it’s own option, meaning you could get a Regal Ltd with a vinyl top and wire wheels in little old lady brown that’d knock off 14’s.
Aside from that, the Magnum R/T is nearly as quick as the SRT8, without the scoops.  The Marauder is sweet, but they look faster than they actually are - making it an anti-sleeper.
The FWD Impala SS’s are actually a good comparison for the aforementioned v-rod.  They’re quick, and handle decent - for an over sized fwd family car. As the vrod is quick, and hanldes decent - for a cruiser. On the other side, a very unassuming Altima 3.5 will run with the Impala (they’re close) and destroy it through any turn, as an SV650 would do to the v-rod - both for less money.
Thanks for remembering the SHO and the GLH (we’ve had both), they often go overlooked. Also, to whoever said theres nothing else like the Syclone/Typhoon - 2 gen’s of Lightning’s (2nd gen is actually quick) - the SS454 (slow) - SRT-10 Ram - Dakota R/T (kinda slow) - and the Silverado SS (AWD, high-14’s, not as good, but not bad)
