A Little Trans-Am for Your Weekend

March 28, 2008

Although the Trans-Am racing series is all but defunct these days, but in the 60’s and 70’s, it was one of the many places where American Manufacturers came together to beat the hell out of each other both on the track and in sales. The Boss 302, Z-28, Javelin and AAR ‘Cuda all battled side-by-side in a bid for understeer glory. To see one of these things in action is nothing short of legendary, so I thought I’d share this doozy of a video I found while avoiding more work browsing YouTube. Enjoy (turn the volume WAAAAAAAY up), and have a great weekend!

Time speed distance (TSD) rallying, was a new thing for me. And it was pretty interesting. For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, TSD rally is where you are given a route, an average speed and a mileage to adhere to. They generally take place on back ass roads.

So to break it down. You show up for the driver’s meeting, they give you a route map and your car’s start time. You then head to an odometer calibration leg where you make sure that your odometer matches the official route log and mileage. From there you come to another stop and the start of the first leg. At your car’s departure time, you head off and then follow the route until you make a check point and are given your exact time, etc.

For each second you are over or under the route time you receive one point… just like golf, lowest score wins.

The American LeMans Series has finally kicked off. The season opener took place with a 12 hour race on a beat up airfield in Florida–the historic 12 Hours of Sebring.

The underclassed LMP2 cars are starting the season off strong with a first and second place overall finish, triumphing over the higher classed LMP1 Audi R10. The number 7 RS Spyder, piloted by Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Emmanuel Collard took first in class and first overall.

This was also a great showing for the private team, Dyson Racing finished second in class and second overall–their highest finish since they began running RS Spyders last season.

In the GT1 class a Corvette locked up first place, while Porsche again pulled through with the 911 GT3 RSR and took first place in the GT2 class.

Yeah, I’ll be gone until next Monday (not this coming one) so I thought I’d post something, while not particularly enlightening, funny and related to transportation and motorsports, at the same time. Enjoy!

Have a great week, everybody!

Colin McRae. Mickey Thompson. Dan Gurney. Paddy Hopkirk. “Big Daddy” Don Garlits. These names are synonymous with excellence in motorsport. We hear of them every day in the enthusiast community; Mika Hakkinen, Mario Andretti, Michael Schumacher, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough- all drivers who have achieved big feats, immense victories, suffered through crashes and sanctioning-body “politics,” and yet persevered to do one thing- win. First let’s get this straight, I don’t watch NASCAR… or at least haven’t since my pudgy ass attended the first Inaugural Brickyard 400.  I don’t like going fast in straight lines.  Or just turning left.  But, it is one of the most popular forms of motorsports.

And realistically, I just wanted to beat Jim at posting something about NASCAR. ;)

Kyle Busch, brought the first import to victory at the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in his Snicker’s Toyota Camry.  I could give you other details on the race, but ummmm, I got really bored reading all the press releases.

The last borderline-interesting fact is that Kyle Busch, at age 22, was the youngest winner ever at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Apologies to all those who are looking for a more detailed recap.  I am sure Jim will chime in via comments and let me know I am a moron for not covering the whole gauntlet.

Tony George, the dude that owns the Indianapolis Motor Speedway venue, told the audience at an Indiana University business conference that he was pursuing options to fix the relationship between the F1 CEO in time for the Speedway’s 100th birthday.

SpeedTV also revealed that a marketing firm has been hired by IMS to help find a F1 title sponsor.  If they can grab the right sponsor, there is a good chance that Formula 1 could return to the US.

The good news is, I have contacted Tony George about having culture|garage being the title sponsor of the event.  I am just waiting to hear back if 50 c|g sticker and 100 bucks will cover the bill.
